Estelle Thomas is a graduate of the University of West Georgia, where she earned a B.A. in piano performance, with a concentration in piano pedagogy under Dr. Carol Gingerich. She has over 8 years of teaching experience to students at varied levels, ages, and nationalities.
Estelle Thomas begin playing piano by ear at the age of eight. She later took lessons with Prof. Jane Tolbert and Lynn Borten. Since her parents traveled frequently due to their missionary work, Estelle developed skills to teach herself how to play the piano. Having first-hand experience with self-teaching, she feels the importance of incorporating ear-training, improvisation, sight-reading as parts of her teaching approach.
While maintaining a private studio, she also served as a faculty member at the Piano Project at The University of West Georgia. During her time there, she found teaching students with learning disabilities, including autism very fulfilling and it continues to be one of her passions.
Her love for improvisation led her to win an achievement award in 2012 for her ‘Improvisation Around Debussy’s Girl with the Flaxen Hair. Estelle began serving as a church musician at the age of 14. She also performed regularly in the Harmony for Healing Music Therapy Program. While at the university, she joined Mount Paran Choir & Orchestra (NW Atlanta). All these positons gave her opportunities to perform on stage countless times.
Estelle is dedicated to teaching the language and tools of making music as a way to improve the lives of students and their families. As a frequent volunteer, she goes to Lascahobas, Haiti every year with Wings Of Hope International, where she helps with the medical clinic and children’s school there. One of her dreams is to bring piano as music therapy to the orphans in Haiti.
She continues to perform and serve as an active member of Music Teachers National Association.
